One of the easiest ways to see how weird human judgment can be is to ask people to guess the price of something.
Show someone a luxury bag, a bottle of whiskey, or a violin. Give them a number first. Then ask them to estimate the real price.
What usually happens is not random at all.
The first number quietly sticks.
That number becomes the place their brain starts from, even if it has nothing to do with the true answer.
That simple classroom-style exercise opens the door to a much bigger idea: a lot of our decisions are built on mental shortcuts. Those shortcuts help us move fast, but they also bend our judgment in predictable ways.

Heuristics and biases are related, but they are not the same thing

The happens when we judge something by how much it resembles our mental picture of a category.
That sounds reasonable until the resemblance starts beating the math.
Here is the classic coin-flip version. Imagine these sequences came from a fair coin:

Most people say the first sequence looks the most random.
But all three are equally possible outcomes of six fair flips.
What people are really doing is comparing each sequence to their internal idea of what randomness is supposed to look like: balanced, mixed, and alternating. The sequence that looks random feels more believable, even though the probability is the same.
The same shortcut shows up in social judgment.
Imagine someone described as shy, withdrawn, highly organized, and detail-oriented. Many people quickly say that person sounds more like a librarian than a farmer.
But that guess can ignore something crucial: the base rate.
If one category is much more common than the other, that background information should matter a lot. When we ignore it and focus only on the vivid description, we fall into .
This is one reason stereotypes can feel convincing. A few visible traits seem representative of a type, so the brain jumps from limited evidence to a broad conclusion.
That jump often feels intelligent. It is just not always accurate.
Availability is why vivid examples can crowd out quiet reality

If an example is recent, dramatic, emotional, or heavily repeated, it becomes easier to retrieve from memory. Once that happens, it starts to feel common.
That is why people can watch several news stories about shark attacks and suddenly feel like the ocean is full of immediate danger.
It is why a stretch of airplane crash coverage can make flying feel wildly unsafe, even though driving is still far riskier in everyday life.
It is why a scary movie can leave you feeling uneasy in a dark room even when you fully know nothing is there.
The event does not need to be statistically common. It just needs to be mentally available.
This matters because media environments are built to amplify what is dramatic, extreme, and memorable. That means the information most available to us is not always the information most representative of reality.
Why would evolution leave us with a system like this?
Because speed is often more useful than perfection.
Thinking carefully takes time and energy. In situations involving danger, uncertainty, or incomplete information, a quick judgment can be more adaptive than a perfect one that arrives too late.
Heuristics help because:
- neural processing is costly, so shortcuts conserve effort
- the world often gives us incomplete or noisy information
- fast social judgments can sometimes help us act sooner
- some patterns in the world really are regular enough that shortcuts work reasonably well
So the point is not that humans are broken.
It is that we are built to be efficient first, and fully rational only sometimes.
The goal is not to eliminate heuristics, but to know when to slow down

You probably cannot stop your brain from generating anchors, stereotypes, or vivid examples. But you can get better at noticing the moment a shortcut is taking over.
A few ways to push back:
- Ask for the base rate. Before trusting the story, ask how common the thing actually is.
- Remove the first number when you can. If you are negotiating, research market ranges before seeing an offer.
- Write down evidence separately from impressions. βFeels trueβ is not the same as βis well supported.β
- Slow down when the stakes are high. Small daily choices can be intuitive. Bigger choices deserve more deliberate thought.
- Build domain knowledge. The more you know about an area, the less easily a random anchor or vivid example can move you.
That last point is especially practical. People become less vulnerable to misleading cues when they have stronger background knowledge. Expertise does not make bias disappear, but it gives the brain better material to work with.
Fast thinking is useful, but it should not always be in charge
What I like about heuristics is that they make human thinking feel less mysterious.
They explain why a random number can affect a price estimate. Why a stereotype can feel more persuasive than a statistic. Why a dramatic headline can outweigh a quiet fact.
Our brains are constantly trying to make the world manageable.

The real skill is not becoming perfectly unbiased.
It is learning to notice when fast judgment has taken the wheel, and knowing when it is worth taking that wheel back.
